ScreenLabs is a filmmaking development program designed to foster collaboration among writers, directors, producers, talent and crew through bringing original scripts to the screen. Over the years ScreenLabs has produced many films which have screened in festivals worldwide, won prizes, appeared on the Independent Film Channel and Public Television. Through affiliations with the Screenwrters Workshop, ScreenLabs rounds out a development cycle essential to the professional advancement of film artists and crafts-people seeking to hone skills and invigorate their careers.

2007 was the inaugural year of the ScreenLabs Challenge, a contest designed to empower screenwriters to produce their own scripts. A total of $4,000 in cash prizes were awarded in four different categories: Best Film, Runner Up, Best Screenplay, and an Audience Award. Minnesota film professionals making up the jury included Minneapolis Community and Technical College Cinema Department chair Hafed Bouassida, Director Craig Rice, Producer Christine Walker, and Cinematographer Greg WinterThe Challenge asked screenwriters to write and produce a short film with the theme "A Simple Twist of Fate," and required Minneapolis’ Stone Arch Bridge be used as one of the locations. The contest was open to Minnesota residents who have lived in the state continuously for one year.
